Driving
into the Great Rift Valley towards
Lake Magadi & Lake Natron
is an unforgettable experience
in itself - after a 30 minutes
drive from Nairobi, the ground
suddenly drops and from the
edge of the escarpment you enjoy
a spectacular view of the dramatic
Rift Valley Landscape. Continuing
onwards creates the sensation
of driving to the centre of
the earth - down, down, down
... while the air temperature
gets hotter every minute and
you glide through the arid and
moonlike landscape of the rift
valley escarpment, you come
to think that this journey will
never end - and you don't want
it to end as it gives you an
exhilirating sensation of freedom.
You pass by small villages and
groups of baboons until you
come over the ridge of a small
hill from where you suddenly
see the distant glow of Lake
Magadi. 15 minutes later, you
pass through Magadi town which
has the atmosphere of a gold
rush settlement. Moving onwards,
the journey turns into a real
adventure - the track is hardly
visible any longer as so few
cars pass through here, out
of nowhere a group of Maasai
jump in front of your vehicle
asking for a ride and close
to Lake Natron you have to either
cross a lengthy stretch of tricky
sand or a swamp where the water
often spills over the hood of
your car.

Your stay in this part of the
Rift Valley will add to the
sensation of being at the end
of the world - not quite incorrect
as hardly anybody passes through
this area except the local Maasai
and the occasional shifter smuggling
goods over to Tanzania. Sunrises
over the dry Rift Valley are
deeply moving moments and a
sensation of peace and tranquility
will eventually let all worries
of the world seem far away.
