Koija Camp
The great north of Kenya is one of the last remaining frontiers of virgin wilderness, unchanged since its creation. Samburu territory is just above the Equator, where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the northern desert, just south of Lake Turkana. To share this harsh paradise with its indigenous people, proud nomads whose lifestyle and peaceful coexistence with the surrounding natural environment has changed little over time, is one of life’s truly magical experiences. The camp is not easy to reach, but the best places never are.
With only five tents, Koija Camp, run by Samburu tribesmen, is simple, but of an exceptionally high standard. Luxury, here, has been redefined; while there are no vehicles, no electricity nor modern weapons, they offer superbly talented and knowledgeable guides, a satellite telephone for emergencies and medical coverage in case of the need for emergency evacuation, delicious food and stylishly simple aesthetics designed by the well-known designer Anna Trzebinski.
The camp's speciality are walking safaris, offering a new kind of bush hikes, one personally tailored to the interests and the abilities of private guests. The duration of the journey, the length of the daily walks and the number of camp changes is entirely dependent on the guest’s wishes. The experience can range from a very relaxed weekend with walks in the morning and evening to an expedition that may traverse hundreds of miles. You will walk with warriors amongst wildlife armed only with their traditional weapons -- a ‘white’ spear, sharp senses and generations of experience and knowledge. For a few magical days, you will inhabit another world.
In addition to that, the camps offer immersion into an Africa that few travellers experience: you may happen upon weddings, tribal dances, ritual ceremonies. |

This is camping in style with casual colonial elegance, hot showers and a surprising degree of comfort with toweling gowns in the tent and comfort able leather safari chairs. Cool green lawns stretch between the tents. The food is excellent and often cooked on barbecues in front of you. Before dinner guests sit with drinks around the camp fire.
