Not surprisingly Maputo today has become a popular tourist destination again. The capital of Mozambique offers beautiful sandy beaches and a turquoise ocean next to the many interesting sights ranging from magnificent buildings like the railway station designed by Gustav Eiffel, splendid colonial palaces, wide avenues to lush botanical gardens and bustling markets. This city is always good for a surprise: who would think that Henning Mankell works as director and sometimes as producer in the "Teatro Avenida" and that the Portuguese football legend Eusébio was born on the 25th of January 1942 in Lourenço Marques - the former name of Maputo.
First and foremost it is the more South American rather than African atmosphere, which makes Maputo so intriguing. Street side cafes invite you to linger during the day and also the nightlife has experienced a resurgence - through which the vibrant port city ties in with its not yet forgotten past: in the early 1970ies Maputo was known as one of the hottest party metropoles of Africa. Today this image is revived and one meets in bars, cafes and restaurants - toasting with cold beers and enjoying grilled prawns from the Delagoa Bay with piri-piri sauce or other local specialties.
Zongoene - an unspoiled paradise two hours north of Maputo nestled between the dunes and the trees where the Limpopo bends and winds to meet the Indian Ocean. The journey to Zongoene takes you across the awesome Limpopo Valley, which is an experience in itself. Explore untouched beaches, go fishing, ride quad bike trails through indigenous forests and towering sand dunes and enjoy romantic sundowner cruises.
