Butare in the South Province of Rwanda has long been regarded as the intellectual capital of the country, while Kigali holds most political power. It hosts the National University of Rwanda, as well as the Rwandan National Institute of Scientific Research and the National Museum of Rwanda. The National Museum was built in the early 1990s and is a good source of information on the cultural history of the country and the region. It is often referred to in tourist brochures as the finest museum in East Africa.
