| Currency
The unit of currency is the Rwanda Franc.
Kigali has a couple of ATMs that accept international credit cards. US$ Travellers Checks are accepted in Kigali but at a lower exchange rate. Credit Cards are only accepted in big hotels, at the park headquarters and in some bank for local currencies withdrawal.
Except in Kigali where you can get a “normal” rates, Euro, if accepted, is most often exchanged into local currencies at the rate of 1 Euro = 1 USD. Difficult to swallow for a proud convinced European, but the free market rules. Therefore, we recommend that you bring sufficient US$ in cash.
Please ensure that US$ notes are year 2000 and/or more recent and only in denominations of $50 and $100 notes. Smaller denominations of year 2000 and/or more recent will get you a less favourable rate (5 to 10% less). Equally, year 1998 and 1999 notes are accepted at some places but will yield a less favourable rate. Year 1997 and older notes are not accepted for fear of counterfeit.
Any excess Rwandese Francs are not exchangeable overseas, nor can they be converted back into foreign currency in Rwanda.
