Alphonse Island is a small triangular coral island, home to a lush grove of coconut palms and with a live coral reef sheltering clear lagoon waters. It is situated one hour's flight from Mahe. Beautiful white beaches line the edges of the dense natural forest, interspersed with the remnants of old commercial coconut groves where one will find ancient ambling tortoises, scurrying crabs and an array of bird species.
The island offers spectacular diving, with the dive site dividing naturally into three areas: on the shallow plateau is a beautiful coral garden leading to a wall 20-40m with huge overhangs, overgrown with soft corals and gorgonian fan corals; nurse sharks or sleeping sting rays can be found in small canyons; beyond is the steep abyssmal wall dropping to 500m below. Alphonse is renowned for the saltwater fisherman with its large populations of bonefish, barracuda, tuna and wahoo to name but a few. The depths of the ocean open up a whole new world of underwater fauna and untouched corals.
