Denis Island is situated north of Mahe. The island has abundant coconut palms, takamaka and casuarina trees. In 2004, 47 Seychelles Fody from Fregate Island and 58 Seychelles Warbler from Cousin Island were relocated to Denis as part of a Nature Seychelles conservation project. A lighthouse built in 1910 still stands on the northern edge of the island, also there is a chapel in the small fishing village of St. Denis.

Denis Island is named after a French explorer, Denis de Trobriant, who first sighted her from the vessel L’Etoile on 12 August, 1773. The island is endowed with fertile soil, making it to be a haven for a diverse assortment of birds as well as turtles and seals. In his log, De Trobrianthe mentions that in the name of the King of France, he buried a bottle containing the Act of Possession that, to this day, has never been found.
