Because of its geographical location and maritime exposure the Climate of Seychelles is warm and tropical humid with a strong maritime influence. The islands lie outside the hurricane belt and so are unaffected by these severe and ill-tempered tropical cyclones.
With an average temperature of 29°C, the Seychelles climate is tropical and beach-perfect. It is hot and humid for most of the year but the heat is usually moderated by cooler sea breezes.
The Climate in Seychelles can be divided into main seasons, the Northwest Monsoon and the Southeast Monsoon separated by two relatively short Inter-Monsoon periods.
During the north-west trade winds that visit between the months of October and March, the sea is generally calm and the weather warm and humid, with average winds of 8-12 knots.
The Seychelles experience quite a lot of rain at all times of the year, but this mostly occurs in brief showers followed again by tropical sunshine, hence the lush green vegetation. In January and February the islands receive their life-giving rains, rejuvenating the rivers and streams and teasing the vibrant foliage into rainbow colours.
The hottest months are December to April. The months between May and September bring drier, cooler weather, and livelier seas - particularly on south-eastern coasts – and winds of 10-20 knots. The Pre-Southeast Monsoon season of April is the calmest and warmest period of the year as the winds die down before reversing to the Southeast.
The tropical sun is very strong and even on overcast days one should take great care to cover-up and use high factor suntan protection.
