Located in the inner island of the Seychelles, Frégate is just 20 minutes from Mahé and has its own airstrip for light aircrafts and helicopters. The island is named after the Frégate bird, famous for its six-foot wingspan, which can still be seen feeding off the island’s coast. This suits it as still offers refuge to one of the world’s rarest birds. Popular inhabitants of Frégate also include the giant tortoise, the green turtle and the smaller hawksbill turtle. Frégate is one of the only two islands in the world where the giant tortoise roams wild. It is characterised by fresh spring water flowing down attractive white-granite rock formations, exotic fruit trees bearing almond, mango, golden apple, banyan trees and a jungle of palm. There is also the tenebrionid beetle, that is found nowhere else in the world.
