Kigoma is a small town surrounded by rugged mountains and forests in a tropical setting overlooking Lake Tanganyika on the eastern side. In 1915, Kigoma became the main trading base in the region and to date it is the main port on Lake Tanganyika and the main railway stop in the west of Tanzania. Its former importance, the final stop of the central line Railway, can still be found in the stately railway station, Kaiser House, the seat of government, and other German government buildings and houses.
One of the highlights of a visit to Kigoma is the steamer Liemba, originally built in Germany in 1913 and considered the oldest operational passenger vessel in the world. It makes a good overland base for visits and chimpanzee safaris to both Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale National Park.
