Towering over the town of Arusha, Mount Meru is a key factor to the cultural and agricultural history of this region. Many believe the mountain was once higher than Kilimanjaro before volcanic activity caused an explosion of the peak. The result was the creation of the saddle that can be seen when driving to Arusha from the Namanga border. You can easily imagine the continuation of the mountain and where that peak would have reached. Mount Meru is the fifth highest peak in Africa. As it is far less travelled than Kilimanjaro, it is often a more intimate experience.
