Saadani has only recently become a fully protected national park and is unique for its extraordinary diversity of scenery and wildlife. Beach, bush and river have been thrown together in such a colourful clash of ecosystems that there is nothing to compare with it anywhere on the Eastern Coast of Africa. The Wami River, which passes through the park and empties into the Indian Ocean, hosts a large population of hippos, crocodiles, flamingos, and many large bird species and is a wonderful place for early morning or sunset boat safaris. Elephants are occasionally viewed bathing and playing on Saadani’s beach, and sometimes venturing into the crashing surf, which alone makes Saadani one of the most special parks to visit in Eastern Africa.
