Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest protected wildlife reserve and its rivers, hills, and plains are home to roaming elephant populations, the famous wild dogs, and some of the last black rhino. Due to its remote location, it has remained one of the untouched gems of Tanzania’s parks. The Rufiji River Delta is the striking feature of the game reserve and home to a plethora of varied water and bird life.
Along its shores, oppulent hippos sleep languidly in the mud and sun themselves and crocodiles are common along the Rufiji’s riverbanks. Being a game reserve, a larger range of activities are permitted in the Selous than in National Parks. Boating safaris offer visitors a chance to see the diverse life along the Rufiji River up close and walking safaris and fly camping add a sense of adventure to the African experience.
Fly camping is a highly recommended part of any safari to Selous. Guests sleep under spacious mosquito nets equipped with safari bedrolls. A bucket shower with hot water, and a short drop toilet is set up behind camp. A full complement of staff provide a full breakfast, light lunch and a three-course candlelit dinner. Although this experience may sound quite rustic, many of our guests single it out as the most memorable part of their journey to Africa.
