Lake Bunyonyi is surrounded by steep sided heavily cultivated mountainous scenery and is dotted with 29 islands. It is up to 900m deep, making it the second deepest lake in Africa. The scenery is very picturesque and makes for a good change and rest on a longer safari. The lake surface is fresh, bilharzia free and safe for swimming whih is popular as are boat and dugout canoe excursions.
The word ""Lake Bunyonyi"" means 'the place of many little birds' and bird life is prolific with Uganda's national bird the Crested Crane a common sighting. Fish on the other hand are extremely scarce. The weekly Rutindo market is a colourful attracting flotillas of canoes across the lake with basket loads of vegetables and other goods.
