Mgahinga National Park protects the Ugandan portion of the Virungas, an imposing string of nine freestanding extinct and active volcanoes that runs along the border with Rwanda and the Congo. Although mountain gorillas do live in Mgahinga National Park they are not always resident in Uganda, moving across to the neighbouring national parks in Rwanda or Congo for months on end. It is therefore more normal to plan a day walk to climb one of the volcanoes (not to be taken lightly since your starting altitude is 2,300m) or to take part in a nature walk or a trip in a dug-out canoe on Lake Mutanda. Those wishing to do none of the above activities and to simply relax at the lodge can enjoy watching the birds attracted by the flowers and trees in the grounds.
