| The currency in Uganda is the Ugandan shilling. It is available banknotes of 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, and 1,000 Shillings as well as in coins valued from 500, 200, 100 and 50 Shillings. There is no limit in the foreign currencies introduced into the country.
Money can be exchanged at the international airport and authorised dealers and banks. However, in smaller towns, it may be difficult to change money. Banks are normally closed on Sundays and other Government holidays. Big Hotels will also be able to change your money, but at a substantial fee.
ATMs only exist in the larger towns and only some of them accept international credit cards. Travellers’ cheques are only accepted on certain conditions in Uganda and international credit cards are only accepted by upmarket lodges, major hotels and some tour operators (such as rafting on the Nile) with a surcharge of 10%.
