An awe-inspiring wildebeest stampede , a group of lion cups clumsily trying to climb a tree while their mum is lazily enjoying the early morning sun, a magical gorilla encounter , a graceful herd of impala resting under a group of trees, a close encounter with an elephant and her baby who can't see you but visibly get nervous as they smell you, sweeping views of miles of golden grass dotted with thorny bushes and ringed by blue hills .
Eastern Africa is a region of breathtaking beauty and great contrasts - from palm-fringed sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya straddling the Equator; from tropical rain forests to harsh arid deserts in the north; from vast open plains and savannah to acacia woodlands; from small farms to rich ranches and estates of tea, coffee, pineapple, banana, wheat and sisal; from small muddy rivers teeming with hippo and crocodiles to Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile river and the largest lake in Africa, and Lake Tanganika, the 3rd deepest lake in the world, full of tropical fish. A distinguishing feature of the region is the the Great Rift Valley , a massive fracture line in the earth's surface which runs from Jordan through Kenya and Tanzania to Mozambique and contains spectacular soda and fresh water lakes, interspersed by volcanoes. |
