Adventure & Explore:

Jade Sea Safari to remote Lake Turkana
Nairobi - Ol Pejeta - Samburu - Marsabit - Chalbi Desert - Lake Turkana - Suguta Valley - Maralal - Lake Baringo – Nairobi
Day 1 Ol Pejeta
Delhi

Start your journey with a scenic drive from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Ranch, situated at the foot of the ragged snow-capped Mt Kenya. You will drive past the fertile lowlands of central Kenya and the breathtaking highlands with views of Mt Kenya (3-4 hours)

Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Laikipia plains is set within extensive savannah grasslands and riverine forests bordering the Ewaso Nyiro River and offers great views of Mount Kenya. Although the dense vegetation makes game watching more of a challenge than in other National Parks, the conservancy has one of the highest density of wildlife in Kenya.

As one of only four private game reserves in Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers the opportunity for night game drives, guided bush walks and both horse or camel riding across its game-rich plains. The neighbouring chimpanzee sanctuary is worth a visit especially for those who have a great interest in endangered animals.

Day 2 : Samburu
Delhi

Continue your journey to Samburu, with spectacular views of the dramatic mountains and vast plains of Northern Kenya (3 hours)

A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserves lies on the fringes of the vast, arid desert, once known as the Northern Frontier District. It is a great place to see large herds of elephant, who roam the hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening. Samburu National Park also provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy’s zebra and the rare Beisa oryx.

Enjoy wonderful game drives and, outside the national park, also walking safaris and visits to remote villages of the Samburu tribesmen.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 3 : Marsabit
Agra

Today, you leave the beaten path behind and drive to Marsabit, one of Kenya’s remotest park (4 hours).

Marsabit National Reserve consists of a forested mountain that rises like an oasis in the middle of the desert wilderness and is the only source of permanent surface of water in the region. The reserve features three crater lakes that provide habitat for a variety of birdlife. One of the lakes, Lake Paradise, is most scenic and an enchanting spot and a good place to camp.

Marsabit is also known for large elephants. There are also rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, warthogs, buffalo, Grevvy zebra which is specific to northern Kenya, reticulated giraffe, hyena, antelope and many bird species.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 4 : Chalbi Desert
Agra

During your onward drive to the remote Chalbi Desert (4-5 hours), you will feel a thrill of adventurous and freedom in this expansive, sparsely habituated space.

Surrounded by volcanoes and ancient lava flows, Chalbi Desert is the hottest and most arid region in Kenya. Though it is a harse and sparsely populated desert, its known for its stunning natural beauty. It has towering sand dunes and volcanic mountains.

The Kalacha oasis is a permanent watering point - several days’ walk from the closest suitable grazing areas, and camels, cattle, donkeys and goats gather here in mass. With its traditional caravan routes, the region is also home to Kenya's last nomadic tribes, such as the Turkana, Samburu, Marakwet, Pokot, El Molo, and the Gabbra tribes. The Gabbra people of this area are a hardy race, and adaptation to a nomadic way of life ensures their survival.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 5 - 6 : Lake Turkana
Agra

Your sojourn across the northern frontier finally brings you to the shores of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake (6-7 hours)

Lake Turkana, formerly Lake Rudolf, is a jade green jewel in the dry north of Kenya bordering Ethiopia. The lake is 256 km long and 48 km wide and the impression when first setting eyes on this lake is one of having left earth and landed on another planet -no plants, no creature, only stones over stones.

Visit the El Molo tribesman in their village, who are said to be the smallest tribe in Africa, relax, visit the local lodge to swim and enjoy a sunset boat cruise. Caution should be exercised near the lake as its waters are crocodile infested.

Accommodation: Traditional Bandas (Huts)
Day 7 : Suguta Valley

Departing Lake Turkana via the very scenic but rocky road out of the Rift Valley, you head south the Suguta Valley. The Suguta Valley, one of the remotest places in Kenya, is part of the Rift Valley between Lake Baringo and Lake Turkana. At the north end, the valley floor is only a few hundred metres above sea level, making it one of the lowest parts of the Rift Valley structure. It is one of the hottest parts of Kenya with dramatic scenery - deserts, volcanic cones, salt lakes and uneven lava fields. An incredibly harsh country, the region is sparsely populated, with only few Turkana people living here.

Lake Logipi, a saline, alkaline lake lies at the northern end of the valley, where it is separated from Lake Turkana by a series of volcanoes. Saline hot springs discharge on the northern shoreline of Lake Logipi and at Cathedral Rocks near its southern limit, which help to maintain water at times of extreme aridity. During the rainy season, the temporary Lake Alablab sometimes hosts flamingos - not as pink as their cousins down south, but the birds are still a fantastic sight.

A guided Camel walk is a great way to explore the amazing landscapes and sparsely populated nomadic communities. After a picnic lunch, you walk with camels and Samburu guides in these breathtaking landscapes to the foothills of Mt. Nyiro where you set camp together with the guides and camels. Mt. Nyiro stands to the East of the Suguta Valley and even though it is surrounded by desert, its upper slopes are covered in forest - a sharp contrast to the dry, dusty landscape further down - used by the Samburu people for grazing during dry seasons. Small springs surface lower down to nourish the villages of Tuum and South Horr and numerous other small settlements in the foothills. From the top of Mt. Nyiro to the bottom of the Suguta, the land drops over 2500m in less than 20km.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 8 : Maralal

Your journey backwards towards civilization begins with a stop at Maralal (4-5 hours)

Maralal is a frontier town, the beginning and end of the Great Northern wilderness and the staging post for many great adventures. This small town is a thriving centre for the local Samburu people, and the streets are always busy with camels, passing warriors and traders.

Here the broad arid plains give way to the spectacular Loroghi Hills and the high, wild Matthews Ranges. Dry river beds course through this land, and have become the tracks and routes of nomadic camel trains. Near Maralal is one of the most breathtaking scenes in all of Kenya which must be one of the great views on Earth – the Losiolo escarpment, an endless stretch as land dropping down to the Suguta Valley.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 9 : Lake Baringo

Your drive will bring you to Lake Baringo (4 hours) where you finally get back to tarmac road, with some of the most amazing and breathtaking views of the Rift Valley.

Lake Baringo is a fresh water lake and with its picturesque islands and encircling mountains is a spectacular sight. The lake has a lot of fish and consequently many herons, cormorants and marabous can be found here. On Gibraltar Island, a birders' paradise, are breeding more Goliath herons than anywhere else in East Africa.

Enjoy a bird walk and a boat safari on the lake, a unique way of discovering the hidden islands, birdlife and wildlife. You also have a chance to interact with the native Pokot tribes people who live on the shores and islands of the fresh water lake.

Accommodation: Dome Tents
Day 10 : Nairobi

After breakfast, enjoy an early morning boat ride in search of hippo, crocodile and fish eagle. Afterwards, you drive through the dramatic Rift Valley to arrive back in Nairobi in the late afternoon (4-5 hours)
